June 20, 2002 e-mail from Larry

Hi Frank,

Just wanted to drop you a quick e-mail.  I was very happy to get your postcard.  Not too long after graduation (1/69), I went to Navy boot camp at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Illinois.  I don't know how far that is from Lisle, but I remember it was Cold as Hell in January!!!  The following year after radioman school I was off to Long Beach, California.  Then off to Viet Nam on an ocean going minesweeper.  Didn't see much action over there except when I was on liberty.  Came back to good old New Jersey in 1972 and attended Camden County College, transferred from there and went to Glassboro State College and got my BA in biology.  I got married in 1977 to my first, who is also my current wife, Eileen (coming up on 25th year anniversary).  I started working for New Jersey Dept. of Environmental Protection in 1981 in the Bureau of Compliance & Enforcement of the Air Program where I am currently employed as a supervisor.  I work, would you believe, in Camden, and pass our old High School building from time to time.  I live in Winslow Twp. Lower Camden County and have for the last 24 years.  I have two great children, Erin 20 years old who will be a Junior at Cabrini College and Tim who is attending Paul VI High School.  I'll send you more information on some of our classmates in another e-mail later.

P.S. I'm in the Knights of Columbus and found out that Martin Costa, one of our classmates, is also a member of my council.  I'll ask him to contact you and update you as well.

Larry

FROM THE 2003 YEARBOOK UPDATE

Larry Nelson - Berlin, NJ

Accomplishments: Marrying and becoming a father (not a priest) is number one in my book. Becoming a good father is a never ending challenge. Graduation from Glassboro State College with my B.A. in Biology is a close second given my rather dubious academic accomplishments at SJHS.

Memories: One of the funniest was when Robert Balassaitis gave the boys a display of his martial arts expertise by attempting to break a broomstick in half with a karate chop - the stick never broke. The next day Bob came to school with a cast on his arm. Another was when the entire Art class hid in the closet and marched out to greet Sr. Celsia. We thought she'd appreciate the humor until she turned us in to Mr. Plocharski. When I ducked into Mr. Lux's class because Mr. Plocharski was coming down the hall and it was in between classes. I knew I would get a detention. Mr. Lux just kept teaching his German class. After 5 minutes I left his room without him saying so much as one word. Dieses ist gut Mr. Lux ( I really loved that guy, he saved my tail).

Future: Retire in good health, fish and crab on my Boston Whaler. Enjoy all my hobbies which include Civil War Re-enacting, Astronomy, Photography, Woodworking. I really don't have time for work and should retire.

FROM THE 2018 YEARBOOK UPDATE

Larry Nelson - Berlin, NJ

Accomplishments: Being married for 41 years (to the same woman), staying out of jail (probably because I've been married to the same woman for 41 years), staying alive long enough to collect Social Security and Medicare. Got a total knee replacement A+++

Memories: None that I can think of.

Future: Hope to be available for the 75th reunion.
